Two US defence giants ponder Alvis bid

Article Abstract:

The US defence contractors, General Dynamics and United Defense Industries, have been reported to be preparing takeover bids for the UK armoured vehicles group, Alvis. The UK firm Vickers is also said to be interested. The spate of interest in Alvis is a result of its recent merger with the armoured vehicles division of GKN, which gives Alvis a strong position in that sector of the market. The merger will not actually be formalised until approved by shareholders. This gives the bidders some time to propose alternative arrangements.
