Two men. On the left, Thomas Harris, a portly, bespectacled gent: Father Christmas after a night on the tiles. On the right, his creation: a murderer and connoisseur of human flesh. Are they allies, buddies, alter egos? Or the Jekyll and Hyde of a single self?

Article Abstract:

There has been extremely strong interest in the launch by Heinemann of 'Hannibal,' a sequel to the very successful novel 'The Silence of the Lambs,' by Thomas Harris. The global hardback print run of the new novel is 1 million copies, of which 175,000 will be available for sale in the UK. It is likely that 'Hannibal' will be the best-selling novel of 1999, and there are already plans for a film version. The key paradox of Harris's success is to make a murderer like Hannibal Lecter appear attractive.
