Tyrant who made the mistake of falling in love with Britain

Article Abstract:

Former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet has been arrested in the UK, a country he has long held in high regard. He succeeded in ensuring that he would never be brought to trial in Chile, and appeared to assume that he was in no danger of being arrested in the UK. It does not seem that the UK government deliberately lured him into the country in order to arrest him and thus boost its ethical foreign policy standing. Pinochet instigated a brutal regime, establishing concentration camps for large numbers of his opponents in the most remote parts of Chile.

The lost heart of South America

Article Abstract:

Paraguay, which attracts few tourists, is very different from other Latin American countries. The country remains relatively isolated, but local people are friendly and welcoming. Asuncion, the capital, is safer than many cities in neighbouring Brazil, and is an attractive place to visit. Other places in Paraguay worth visiting include Lake Ypacarai, which can be reached relatively quickly by steam train from Asuncion.
