UK: ALZHEIMER DRUGS TOO COSTLY FOR NHS
Article Abstract:
Choline-sterase inhibitors are proving too expensive for the NHS to prescribe in the fight against Alzheimer's disease. These drugs would be suitable to treat around 35,000 of the 500,000 or so Alzheimer's sufferers but would cost around GB[pound] 20mn in the first year, increasing to GB[pound] 35mn after that. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence(Nice) is assessing Aricept and Exolon, two of the drugs concerned and also Galantamine which was licensed in September 2000. It is thought likely to support their use, although in limited circumstances.
