UK: NEW REPORT INTO ALCOHOL SMUGGLING
Article Abstract:
Unlicensed premises such as cars and people's homes are being used to sell alcohol which has been brought into the UK illegally, according to a British Institute of Innkeeping report released on 29 February 2000. The report revealed that even eight-year-olds were buying cheap alcohol from criminals, leading to a sharp rise in the number of youngsters being taken to hospital suffering with the effects of drink. The institute wants duty disparity between the UK and the Continent to be cut, claiming that the problem of illicit wine, spirits and beer is causing its members to go out of business.

BELGIUM: CHIMAY BEER GETS MARKETING REVAMP
Article Abstract:
Chimay, the popular Belgian beer produced by Trappist monks, is to be given a marketing revamp in order to make it "more visible", and increase its value-enhancement. The old plain label will be discarded in favour of a "younger, more lively" design with "bright, dynamic colours". Chimay is also planning to increase sales in major export markets, in particular the US, Britain and France. There will also be advertising to boost brand awareness. Little of the beer is actually consumed by the monks, but the annual turnover of GB[pound] 12mn from 1.3mn cases of beer does help to ensure the survival of the monastic order.
