Article Abstract:

The UK broadcaster, the BBC, has unveiled plans to offer a free sports channel in return for the broadcaster gaining government approval to impose a digital licence fee. A panel has recommended that an annual supplement of GB[pound] 24 should be introduced as it recommended an increase in BBC funds until 2006 of GB[pound] 150-200mn. The proposal, is thought to be supported by the Minister for Sport, Kate Hoey and will need approval however, from the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Chris Smith.

The BBC's digital dilemma

Article Abstract:

All television in the UK is set to become digital in the near future. This will make it very hard for the BBC's channels to withstand the pressure to become merely another type of pay television. For this reason, the BBC wishes to establish a supplementary licence fee for digital subscribers immediately, in order to set a precedent. The BBC would no longer be a public service if the licence fee were very high, so there are restrictions on the services a BBC digital service could offer. However, the BBC can only survive if it is protected from all other television channels.
