UK: BT BREACHES CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENTS

Article Abstract:

Both the Police and Oftel are said to be investigating allegations that British Telecommunications (BT) has breached confidentiality agreements with its 23mn customers. The allegations revolve around the handing over of a huge database of sensitive customer information to a private company called Computer Data Preparation Services. BT is said to have provided customer details to Computer Data for six years, during which time the company checked and updated these details in order to identify who was entitled to be put on a new discount scheme. The information passed to Computer Data is said to have included every ex-directory number in the UK, bank details of its customers, billing details, information on home burglar alarms connected to the police/security firms by telephone and records of all BT equipment installed. However, Computer Data has stressed that none of this information was passed on to third parties.

UK: BT SHARES WEAKEN

Article Abstract:

British Telecom shares have slid down by 6.5% due to confusion and uncertainty regarding the restructuring of the company. There is concern over where the required GB[pound] 5bn will come from after the sale of stakes in Yell, the directory services, plus BT's wireless division. The plunging prices within the telecom sector is epitomised by BT's stake 20% in SmarTone Communications which was worth HK$ 3bn in May 2000 and plunged to HK$ 1.4bn by November 2000.
