UK: CONCERN OVER NI COMPUTER SYSTEM

Article Abstract:

Andersen Consulting could face legal action from the UK government after it emerged on 29 February 2000 that the new national insurance (NI) computer system may not be operational fully until mid-2001, four years late. The forecast was made by the government's spending watchdog, the National Audit Office (NAO), and Andersen Consulting is being blamed for a problem which has resulted in the NI contributions of pensions being recorded incorrectly.

UK: NEW FIGURES ON HOUSE FIRES

Article Abstract:

Over the five years to end-1998, almost 7,000 house blazes in the UK were attributable to candles, with 61 fatalities and 3,000 injuries the result. Home Office figures released on 3 September 2000 revealed that 1,752 house blazes were caused by candles alone in 1998, 77% more than 1994's 992. The growing popularity of candlelit evenings, coupled with the use of candles for aromatherapy, are seen as key factors behind the increase.

Getting away with it all...

Article Abstract:

Companies selling travel insurance in the UK are introducing a range of measures to identify fraudulent claims. It is very common for people to claim for much more expensive versions of items they have lost or had stolen, such as video cameras and sunglasses. Other cases represent serious or more methodical attempts at fraud. The value of all detected fraudulent claims totals around 50 million pounds sterling a year.
