UK: SA BREWERIES IN ACQUISITION RUMOUR

Article Abstract:

South African Breweries resisted the bad news of a competition inquiry into the industry with rumours that it may be set for an important acquisition. The SA group may be preparing to takeover the brewing operations of one of its rivals. SAB has no presence in the UK, one of Europe's largest beer markets. SAB could be interested in the operations of Bass or Whitbread who have both been rumoured as wanting to sell beer-making businesses. The South Africans could also target smaller regional players.

UK: CONCERNS RAISED OVER BASS PURCHASE

Article Abstract:

A number of concerns surrounding the purchase of UK brewer, Bass, by Belgium's Interbrew have been raised by the UK Competition Commission. A decision on remedies to the concerns raised is expected to be revealed 4 January 2001 by Stephen Byers, the Trade and Industry Secretary after he receives the Commission report on 6 December 2000.
