UK: EUROTUNNEL PRESENT PLANS FOR SECOND TUNNEL

Article Abstract:

Eurotunnel is to present plans for a second Channel Tunnel to British and French governments. The feasibility study for the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions will include costing of two main options. These are for either another rail tunnel or one where motorists can drive through. The options are said to have been costed at less than the GB[pound] 4.65bn (1985 prices) which it took to construct the original tunnel. The second tunnel could use much of the existing infrastructure although construction costs can quickly escalate. Under its 99-year concession agreement Eurotunnel must present proposals by the end of this year although it has until 2010 to decide whether or not to proceed and until 2020 before it must be operating.

UK: MIXED RESULTS FOR EUROTUNNEL

Article Abstract:

Without the pull of duty-free shopping, the number of cars using Eurotunnel to cross the Channel declined by 12% in the third quarter 2000 to 750,000 vehicles. Car traffic was also hit by an increase in prices to compensate for the loss of duty-free revenues. However, the number of trucks using the tunnel increased by 31% to 272,000 vehicles, giving Eurotunnel a 46% share of cross-Channel traffic. Freight is to account for the majority of the company's business in the future. Total operating revenues totalled GB[pound] 145.1mn in the quarter, up 4% versus a year earlier.

Miller heads the Eurolink consortium that also involves French and Austrian partners, and has won a GB 110mn order for tunnelling and bridge work across the Medway in Kent, on part of the 68 mile rail link.
