UK: FASHION FOR OBSCURE INTERNET SITE NAMES

Article Abstract:

There is a growing trend in the UK for Internet websites to have obscure names that have little in the way of association with what a site offers. It is now recognised that web names need to be memorable rather than meaningful. One such name is Tangozebra, a producer of voiceover software. The company, formerly Insigma Technologies decided on re-branding because of confusion between itself and another company with a similar name plus difficulty spelling the name by people. Again, the name chosen by the company was selected for its memorability rather than an indicator of its services.

Nostalgia revisited

Article Abstract:

Topic Records has released eight ballads produced for BBC radio between 1957 and 1964 by Charles Parker, Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger. These ballads were extremely influential, and their impact is still audible in radio features in which there are montaged voices or music and speech intertwined. However, these ballads are actually not as good as they are reputed to be. Only two of them, 'The Big Hewer' and 'The Fight Game,' still seem magnificent 40 years later.
