UK: GENDER PAY GAP MUST BE TACKLED

Article Abstract:

The focus of government policy should be the huge gap that still exists between men's and women's pay, according to a new study by the Institute of Public Policy Research. Over the last six years the percentage of women in work has hardly changed from 44%m while the gender gap between incomes is still very apparent. Policies should also address increasing lone mothers' benefits and choice, rather than concentrating on getting them into jobs. The research says that policy makers have become diverted by the myth of equal female involvement in the workplace and have not addressed the real issues.

M and S goes shopping worldwide for new chairman

Article Abstract:

Marks and Spencer used to appoint its chairmen from members of the Sieff family which founded the company, but this has changed. Sir Richard Greenbury was the company's first chairman from outside the Sieff family. He has left his post, and the company is carrying out a global search for a new non-executive chairman. The role of the chairman needs to be carefully defined, and one analyst argues that it should consist of running the board, allowing the executive directors to sort out the company.
