UK: GRAMMAR SCHOOLS NOT HELPING THE POOR?

Article Abstract:

Just 2.7% of grammar school pupils are entitled to free meals, according to official figures released on 7 November 2000, less than the 17.1% of pupils throughout England. The figures challenge the belief that poor youngsters in the UK are given help by grammar schools. In Birmingham, 5.1% of grammar school pupils received free school meals, against the 36.1% of comprehensive schoolchildren. The Campaign for State Education's Margaret Tulloch claimed that the previously held idea that selection gave youngsters in poverty a way out is now no longer true.

UK: FAMILIES COULD GET NEW TAX CUTS

Article Abstract:

The new UK Budget for 2001 could include more tax cuts for families with children, to try and help the government fight off opposition in election year. The changes could include an improved working families tax credit, and the launch of a new child tax credit, replacing the married couple's allowance. Details are expected during the Budget statement on 8 November 2000.
