UK: NEW SOFTWARE HELPS CCTV DETECT CRIME

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the Universities of Leeds and Reading, UK, have developed software that can analyse the contents of CCTV data and decide if someone is about the commit a crime. If the system detects unusual movements that suggest someone is about to steal a car, an alarm would sound. In the New Scientist magazine, one of the researchers, Dr Steve Maybank, explains that the software can distinguish between the way normal car owners approach cars and the much more wary and indecisive method used by a potential thief. In a similar development, London Underground is testing a product developed by Kings College London, which can spot potential danger in crowd situations.

Roll out the invention machine

Article Abstract:

Invention Machine Corp, which originated in the Soviet patent office in Baku, has launched the latest version of its TechOptimiser software in the UK. This is designed to address product development at the concept stage, and is intended for engineers and scientists. It is based on general principles which often arise in specific design problems, and assists designers by asking questions which lead to a precise definition of the problem. It is then possible to reach practical solutions which may not otherwise have been considered.
