UK: RECOVERY IN NUMBERS OF SCOTTISH SALMON
Article Abstract:
According to the Scottish branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature, there appears to be a recovery in numbers of grilse (young salmon) returning to Scottish rivers from the Atlantic. It has warned against over-optimism, citing the background of a steady and serious fall in numbers; but the spawning stock for 2000 is much improved on that for 1999. In 1999 the number of salmon caught in Scotland was just 12% of the figure for 1969, giving rise to fears of extinction. An electronic salmon counter, however, has confirmed the recent rise in grilse.
