UK: RESEARCH MOTION LAUNCH WIRELESS PDA
Article Abstract:
Research Motion, a Canadian company, is testing its new personal digital assistant (PDA) called "The Blackberry" in the UK at subsidiaries of US companies. The product is hand-sized and uses a wireless connection to receive and send e-mail, organise contact lists and synchronise user's calendars. The product will sell for GB[pound] 400 in Britain plus a monthly telephone connection fee. Aimed mainly at business users the system will be available through a deal with BT Cellnet, which is installing a high-speed wireless network called GPRS. The product will intensify competition between PDAs and third-generation phones. The product also faces competition from Palm, Handspring and Psion, which makes rival PDAs.

Life in the fast lane claims an American legend
Article Abstract:
Seymour Cray is a designer of fast computers using sequential or scalar design to achieve speed at the floating-point arithmetic, but competition is making him attempt a link with massive parallelism. This has been used by the American companies Thinking Mahines, Intel and NCube and the British company Meiko. They use more standard chips than Cray computers. Cray 3, produced by Cray Computer Corporation, has a problem with its electrical connections, delaying its availability and causing cancellation of orders. Cray Research developed the X-MP, Y-MP and the compatible C-90 which is as fast as the Cray 3 but easier to produce.

The tritium factor
Article Abstract:
The further development of nuclear weapons will be severely hampered while they remain dependent on the rare radioactive gas tritium, which decays at 5% a year and can therefore render nuclear weapons ineffective after a certain time. This is a particular problem in the US, which has not been able to produce any tritium since 1988, and in the UK, where the only tritium production facility is now becoming outdated.
