Fears multiply over growth of genetic farms

Article Abstract:

The UK government's Department of the Environment has released figures that show that the number of farms dealing or experimenting with genetically engineered crops has doubled since the beginning of 1997. Currently there are 182 registered sites in the UK. Campaigners fear that the test plants might cross-fertilise and their modified genes be introduced into other species. For instance if a modified gene gives resistance to herbicides, this resistance could be passed on to weeds, which will therefore need new herbicides to control.
