UK: VOCATIONAL SUBJECTS POPULAR AT UNIVERSITY

Article Abstract:

Some vocational subjects are continuing to be popular according to university entry final figures. A record 14,600 students have enrolled on computer science courses, a 15.7% increase on 1998 figures. Government efforts to increase the number of nurses have paid dividends with a 24% rise in students studying nursing courses. The figures compiled by Ucas also showed primary teacher training numbers were up 4.6%. There is still evidence of a decline in science and engineering numbers. Overall university and college numbers are up 1.5% on 1998. The numbers of mature students, over the age of 21, was steady at 70,000 with little evidence of people being discouraged by tuition fees.

Become part of the renaissance

Article Abstract:

It is common for students at universities in Scotland and Northern Ireland to live at home. However, both Scotland and Northern Ireland are attracting students from other parts of the UK as they undergo cultural and economic revival. Students at Scottish and Northern Irish universities can enjoy a wide range of activities, as in both cases the countryside is easily accessible. Furthermore, the people of Scotland and Northern Ireland are widely regarded as among the most friendly in the UK.

English canon fodder

Article Abstract:

A-level English Literature syllabuses place very strong emphasis on the literary canon, especially 19th century novels such as 'Pride and Prejudice.' In contrast, very little attention is given to contemporary literature. Most contemporary novels that are included in A-level courses are in fact based on a 19th century model. It can be argued that English at A-level is subtly encouraging a very traditional way of looking at literature and the world.
