US: BRITISH SMOKER SUES PHILIP MORRIS
Article Abstract:
A British smoker is to sue Philip Morris, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, for GB[pound] 1mn. This is the first UK action against the American tobacco industry. If successful the case could lead to thousands of other UK smokers bringing cases in the US. British law firm Russell Jones & Walker believes it can succeed in the US. It will be relying on public admissions made by Philip Morris about the addictive quality of nicotine and the link between smoking and lung cancer. It will argue that the smoker was given reassurances by the industry about health implications in the 1970s.

US: REPUBLICAN BUSH TO BE TOBACCO FRIENDLY
Article Abstract:
The Republican US President-elect George W Bush is expected to be a tobacco friendly president when compared with Bill Clinton. Bush is expected to treat the industry with benign neglect, easy policy action and legal assaults. As a result, shares in most big tobacco companies have risen. It is expected to let a potentially devastating anti-racketeering lawsuit pursued by the Department of Justice fade away. The prospect of future litigation against tobacco will be reduced providing relief to BAT and RJ Reynolds.

UK: CUSTOMS FAIL TO DETECT ILLEGAL TOBACCO
Article Abstract:
A Commons committee has revealed that Customs are only detecting 7% of the tobacco that is being smuggled into the UK each year. The illegal importation of tobacco is said to be costing the Government some GB[pound] 2.5bn per year in lost taxes according to the Public Accounts Committee. The committee is demanding that the problem be solved and that there be an increase in the number of arrests and the amount of VAT recovered.
