US: CALIFORNIA SUFFERS FROM ELECTRICITY SHORTAGE

Article Abstract:

California is suffering from an acute shortage of electricity. Supply briefly dipped to 1.5% of capacity triggering a state of emergency where lights in public buildings are dimmed, photocopiers are turned off and air-conditioning is rationed. The Stage 3 emergency lasted two hours with non-essential power consumption eradicated. It poses major risks to productivity and inflation. The problem in California is caused by deregulation of the electricity industry, which removed incentives for the building of new capacity. As demand for electricity grows in high-tech industries power companies have bought electricity from other states but the system reaches breaking point in winter.
