WORLD: LOBBY GROUPS AT WTO CRITICISED
Article Abstract:
Lobbyists looking to cause trouble at the World Trade Organisation's (WTO) meeting are not helping developing countries with their actions, claimed the UK Secretary of State for International Development on 29 November 1999. Speaking in Seattle, Clare Short said that a number of the groups said to be working on behalf of developed nations were taking stances such as urging trade sanctions that would only marginalize such states. WTO ministers are aiming to establish an agenda leading to a negotiating round, which will revise rules governing global trade. However, lobby groups are claiming that the WTO is a capitalist body which is stopping nations from safeguarding their environments and is failing to protect jobs.
