Article Abstract:
The Richard Attenborough Centre for Disability and the Arts in the adult education department at the University of Leicester is a registered charity which has raised 500,000 pounds sterling towards a new building. The Royal Institute of British Architects is organising a competition sponsored by the Independent to choose an architect. People suffering constant pain, blindness, deafness and other disabilities need to learn something for a vocation and/or as an emotional outlet. The building should be attractive and feature special facilities for the disabled unobtrusively.

Is the writing on the wall for public inscriptions?
Article Abstract:
Architects of the 90s tend to use an enlarged book typeface for lettering on buildings as on the extension to the National Gallery. Inside the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery the letter cutter Michael Harvey redesigned the Roman typeface to suit the enlargement. Pioneer of British lettering design Edward Johnston gave his name to a sans serif display face. Eric Gill carved Roman lettering on many 20th century buildings including Leeds University War Memorial.

Brunel's kingdom is the business
Article Abstract:
Strong cooperation between council and commerce in Bristol over recent years has made the city's future seem much more positive. Development is now based on a plan for long-term investment in both culture and inner-city commerce, fighting off competition from shopping mall developments on the fringes of the city. Particular efforts are being made in the Harbourside area of derelict dockland near the centre.
