Watch out for costly imitations
Article Abstract:
Humorous jewellery, often in the shape of cute animals, is not to every collector's taste. However, such jewellery, mostly dating from the 1950s and 1960s, is sometimes made from extremely valuable materials, and therefore commands very high prices. Novelty brooches with genuine gems are continuing to fetch high prices at auction. Indeed, bidders often compete very fiercely among themselves if the jewellery is in the shape of an animal they are particularly attached to. To be valuable, such jewellery must feature a cute animal and be typical of the 1950s or 1960s.

Silver spoons regain their sparkle
Article Abstract:
There has been a sharp rise in prices for collectable wrought silver in the UK. This has been seen in particular with apostle spoons, with those for which the maker is known selling for three and four times their estimated price at auction. The apostle spoon market is attracting new investors, many of whom are undertaking detailed research. Prices for apostle spoons are likely to continue to rise in the near future, but it is wise to regard this as a seller's market.

In the footsteps of the Start-rite twins
Article Abstract:
Consultant to Start-rite Shoes public relations company Ken Holmes researched the origin of original posters for a commemorative book to celebrate Start-rite's bicentenary in 1992. In 1792 it was the first firm making shoes in different sizes and pioneered multi-width children's shoes in 1923. No original artwork of the advertising posters depicting twins survives due to floods, bombing and lack of archiving.
