Watch out - there's a maverick about

Article Abstract:

British bands are much less flexible than their counterparts in the US, according to DJ John Peel, curator of the Meltdown 98 rock festival. He is very enthusiastic about bands that do not belong to the rock music mainstream, and this is reflected in the bands he has assembled for the rock festival. However, he is also interested in some very well-known bands, including Blur. He prefers to remain as far away from show business as possible, as he finds show business personalities and managers very arrogant.

'Being funny is like being gay. It's hard to admit to, people think it's odd. You're born that way.' (comedy workshop in Colchester, England)

Article Abstract:

Those attending a two-day comedy workshop run by Ivor Dembina at the Minories Art Gallery in Colchester, England, were expected to reveal a great deal about themselves. Some found this disconcerting, as they had expected to simply be guided in how to tell jokes effectively. Dembina, resident compere at Hampstead Comedy Club, was determined that those attending the workshop would not get away with just telling standard jokes and not putting part of themselves into their performance.
