Watchdog without teeth
Article Abstract:
The UK Office for the Supervision of Solicitors (OSS), controlled by the Law Society, faces an uncertain future. Some observers believe that it has been ineffective in dealing with complaints about solicitors. Indeed, there are 9,000 complaints outstanding at present, with a six-month backlog of new cases. It is possible that the government will decide to boost the powers of Legal Services Ombudsman Ann Abraham to monitor the work of the OSS, setting it new targets and making recommendations for approaches to complaints-handling.

How do you make a good judge?
Article Abstract:
It is wrong to assume that all judges are out of touch with modern life, according to Judge David Pearl, the new Director of Studies at the Judicial Studies Board. He emphasizes that many judges have direct contact with the community during their judicial tours and are fully aware of popular culture. He feels that a good judge is one who thinks very carefully about what he says in front of the jury, while a bad judge is one who speaks before he thinks.
