We have lift-off, with a financial drag factor

Article Abstract:

The $2 billion, 1.1 billion pounds sterling space shuttle Endeavour will attempt to repair the 4.5 tonne marooned communications satellite Intelsat VI. Endeavour is an extended duration orbiter with a 28 day trip endurance and a crew of seven. Richard Hieb and Pierre Thuot will make the second American space walk since 1985 to fire Intelsat into position above the Atlantic to relay 120,000 simultaneous telephone calls and three television channels. Nasa is restricted to six shuttle flights a year, as 25,000 people are needed to launch and observe the flight at a costof $1 billion Most shuttle flights are mounted to construct the international Freedom space station. The advanced solid rocket motor (ASRM) has been abandoned to save costs.

Let the laser lead you to a heavenly body

Article Abstract:

Scientists have been working for many years on technology which will allow them to view stars more clearly, and are now close to achieving a breakthrough. Research at the Starfire Optical Range in New Mexico has led to the development of an adaptive optics system, which makes available a bright guide star close to the heavenly object being observed. There are still some drawbacks with adaptive optics, but scientists now believe that there will be many changes in optical astronomy over the next 10 years.

Sharp eyes on a tiny rock

Article Abstract:

Asteroid 4179 Toutatis is 4 km - 2.5 miles - from Earth on Dec 08, 1992. It will probably be the only asteroid to be so near Earth before the next century. Small asteroids provide information about the formation of the solar system. Observation of Toutatis' shape and rotation rate form the basis of other discoveries. The Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, Scotland uses the UK Infrared Telescope in Mauna Kea, Hawaii to measure heat radiation emitted by the asteroid.
