Wednesday on his mind

Article Abstract:

Documentary film-maker Victor Kossakovsky found it extremely difficult to track down all the 100 people who were born in St Petersburg, Russia, on the same day as him, Jul 19, 1961. Around 70 were still living in the city, but others had emigrated and others had died. It was also hard to persuade some of these people to appear in his documentary 'Wednesday (19.07.61).' He was relieved that all those who did appear were very ordinary, although some critics have commented that it is a sad reflection on St Petersburg, or on Russia as a whole, that none of them became famous.

Some beefcake for the honeymoon

Article Abstract:

Gay filmmaker Thom Fitzgerald does not feel that he can really identify what a gay film is. He does not feel that his film 'The Hanging Garden' has any of the features usually associated with gay films. However, the film does show a story of past and present through the eyes of a gay protagonist and from the position of an openly gay filmmaker. Fitzgerald had to constantly prove himself to his co-producers while making this film, but the film has actually proved to be very successful.

Petulance, neurosis and all that jazz

Article Abstract:

Making documentaries allows voices to be heard that are not normally heard, according to documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple. Her film 'Wild Man Blues' gives an insight into both the musical and the personal side of Woody Allen. She believe that this film is about youth and age, especially in the contrast between Allen and his then girlfriend Soo-Yi Previn. Her next film will be a version of 'In the Boom Boom Room,' a play by David Rabe.
