Welcome to 'Blair's Babes' but the struggle goes on

Article Abstract:

The UK's new Labour government seems very proud of the fact that it has 101 women MPs, compared with only 13 Conservative women MPs. Only a small proportion of the Labour party's women MPs are in their current position as a result of women-only shortlists, but shortlists did serve to raise the profile of women within the party. Women are still carving out a role for themselves in Parliament, and it must not be forgotten that the UK's MPs are still very unrepresentative of society as a whole.

We know you're one of us, Tony. But who are we?

Article Abstract:

UK Labour party leader Tony Blair has been making a considerable effort to show a more human side of his personality. Like many other leading figures in UK society, he is keen to identify with people whom he believes to be working class, even though he is clearly not really from a working class background. His approach would seem to imply that the UK has become genuinely classless, when in fact class is more demarcated than ever before in some areas.

Blair can keep his romance and flowers

Article Abstract:

UK Labour party leader Tony Blair is aiming to appeal to women voters by using an approach which attempts to focus on issues which are widely regarded as the most important to women. In fact, his approach merely reflects a man's view of what appeals to women. His efforts to appeal to women voters may also be hampered by the fact that he is particularly targeting conservative, middle-class women, many of whom regard him as smug and self-satisfied.
