What a carve-up

Article Abstract:

A number of significant literary figures in the UK have spoken out against the Conservative party. This attitude has a number of significant consequences for modern fiction. It has served to promote double standards, with some writers being criticised on aesthetic grounds but actually being despised for being traditional supporters of the Conservative party. It has also strengthened the elitist reputation of the literary world and create a form of dramatised sociology disguised as the literary novel.

A portrait of the writer as painter

Article Abstract:

A recently discovered sketchbook gives a fascinating insight into novelist William Makepeace Thackeray as an artist. This sketchbook contains around 150 pencil sketches, small watercolours and drawings in pen-and-ink from the period 1827 to 1842. Most of the material dates from the 1830s, when Thackeray moved in fashionable circles in London, England, and Paris, France. Further research is required to establish in detail what new information this sketchbook provides about Thackeray's life.
