Albanians sign up to an empty peace

Article Abstract:

The peace talks to decide the future of Kosovo, Yugoslavia, have effectively come to an end, with the Kosovo Albanians signing an autonomy agreement but the Serbs refusing to sign. The international community seems very unwilling to take firm action against the Serbs, and it seems likely that the Serbs will continue to attack Albanian villages in Kosovo and suffer no repercussions from Nato for doing so. Furthermore, there are worrying signs of splits within the Kosovar delegation.

A strange day in barefoot Baghdad

Article Abstract:

Baghdad, Iraq, is a run-down city where many of the residents are extremely poor. United Nations sanctions have created severe economic difficulties, and there is a strong atmosphere of resignation and decay. This is a long way from the image of Baghdad presented in much of the world's media. It seems unthinkable that the US would consider taking military action against a country that, from the impression presented by Baghdad, would not be able to defend itself.
