When progress was still the order of the day
Article Abstract:
There seems to have been a lack of a clear sense of musical direction in the 1970s. Most musicians probably still believed that the arts were going to become increasingly modern. However, by the end of the 1970s the desirability or even possibility of progress seemed to have vanished. Many new values emerged, and the commercial market grew ever more powerful. A considerable amount of experimental musical work was being undertaken by figures like Cornelius Cardew, but established composers also remained influential.

Watch this sound?
Article Abstract:
The French composer Debussy was called an impressionist very early on in his career when critics could not understand the radical nature of his compositions and put it down to vagueness. Certainly there is evoked in his work impressions of light, water, mist, cloud and similar physical things. Some of his works he has said were inspired by paintings. In L'Apres-midi d'un faune, from 1893, the sinuous embodiment of the sleek animal is unmistakable. However much of his music is not sight related.

Into the Third dimension
Article Abstract:
BBC Radio 3 is currently marking the inauguration of the Third Programme in 1946 with a four-week season including recitals, repeats of the most popular programmes and radio plays. The Third Programme took a very forward-looking approach, particularly in broadcasting modern music. In the 1950s, under William Glock, such music was often juxtaposed with early music and popular pieces. The station has faced some difficult times, particularly with growing competition from television.
