When trust is a four-letter word

Article Abstract:

The decline in job security in the UK has served to reduce trust between employers and employees. Many employees are being forced to work in very stressful conditions, and some are responding by becoming consultants, working for the employers prepared to pay the highest rates. Many employers are now focusing on motivating individuals through performance-related pay, and this has highlighted the very low priority they give to teamwork. The lack of trust tends to have a negative impact on employees' willingness to be innovative.

Flexible benefits packages are alternatives to the basic subsidised health care and pension contributions of 1992. True values are worth knowing for pay differentials and choice. Women need different benefits from men, such as childcare vouchers, and employees preferences are likely to change with time. Administration is no problem as computer software copes with tailoring packages for individuals.

When all else fails, call in the big spenders

Article Abstract:

The local council in the north London borough of Enfield is planning an ambitious regeneration project, and will run an international competition to develop realistic plans for the area's revival. It hopes in this way to attract private-sector finance and ideas, leading to the complete redevelopment of the area around the Edmonton Green shopping centre.
