Who will Tony Blair choose as Britain's new man in Brussels?
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair must shortly consider the appointment of a new European Union commissioner to replace Sir Leon Brittan, whose term of office expires at the end of 1999. The Conservative party has recommended Sir Alastair Goodlad, the chief whip of former Prime Minister John Major, to replace Brittan. Convention indicates that the new commissioner should be a Conservative, working alongside Neil Kinnock, the other UK commissioner, but this does not mean that the Conservative party's recommendation has to be followed. An alternative candidate would be Chris Patten, who is actually better qualified than Goodlad.

Labour's last taboo shouldn't keep a good man from being mayor
Article Abstract:
Black television journalist, writer and independent producer Trevor Phillips has come forward as a candidate for the position of mayor of London, England. This is a positive development, as Phillips is a serious candidate and will also ensure that the black community plays a more significant role in political and other developments in London. He will have to overcome the fact that his two daughters attend a private school, one of the last taboos left in place by New Labour. However, this fact should actually count in his favour with the wider electorate.

A plea to the Ulster unionists: give George Mitchell a chance
Article Abstract:
Senator George Mitchell is to review the peace process in Northern Ireland, at a time when the Ulster Unionists are critical of United Kingdom Northern Ireland secretary, Mo Mowlam. This review is important and the unionists would prefer not to boycott the review, though they have been under pressure. The Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) has carried out provocations, and has murdered a taxi driver. Direct rule would not help the unionists or any other organization in Northern Ireland.
