Why Italy cannot bring war criminals to justice

Article Abstract:

The recent case of Erick Priebke, a former SS captain who was involved in the murder of 335 Italian civilians in 1944, highlights the inability of Italians to deal with war crimes. He was acquitted on the grounds that he was merely obeying orders, but has now been re-arrested as efforts are made to have him extradited to Germany. Italy has never adjusted its penal code to deal specifically with crimes against humanity, and has preferred to forget about war crimes as far as possible.

Another black mark against Italy's judges

Article Abstract:

Italy's anti-corruption magistrates have until recently been seen as heroes, taking a very firm stance against corruption in public life. However, a recent case in which a senior judge was jailed on charges that he accepted bribes has served to damage the credibility of these judges. The public have also been alarmed by the way in which anti-corruption drives have led to conflicts between politicians and magistrates.
