Why the nation is boldly going nowhere

Article Abstract:

The UK is one of the pioneers in the commercial exploitation of space, and has developed a successful strategy in Earth observation work. However, this work is encountering difficulties, and could stop altogether because of a financial crisis within the European Space Agency (ESA). The UK could be forced to leave the ESA if it sticks to its hard-line attitude, and analysts now believe that there is an urgent need to find more funding for space science and ground-based astronomy.

Cold enough for quantum tennis

Article Abstract:

Professor George Pickett and Professor Tony Guenault of the University of Lancaster are conducting quantum physics research with helium-4 and helium-3. They have cooled helium-3 to 100 millionths of a degree above absolute zero and copper to 2.7 degrees above. Materials' characteristics change at such low temperatures and obey quantum mechanics' laws. Helium gas condenses into a liquid and then into a superfluid which flows without friction or resistance.

Taming Dr Strangelove

Article Abstract:

Many films over recent decades have portrayed scientists as being out of touch with reality, and sometimes even mad. This has served to give science a poor image and to fuel mixed views on the power of science and its role in the lives of ordinary people. Incorrect images of this kind may hamper people's efforts to accurately assess the power and influence of science.
