Windfall awaits Rec directors

Article Abstract:

The publication of the details of the 3 billion pounds sterling flotation of the National Grid Co has been delayed, possibly because industrial conglomerate Hanson, which now controls Eastern Electricity, is proving obstructive. Embarrassment has also been caused by revelations that directors of some regional electricity companies could receive windfall tax benefits as part of the sale. This is designed to compensate directors for taxation on the grid shares which they have the right to receive in the flotation. The UK government has already come under pressure following revelations that directors will gain large sumes from the grid flotation.

The mobile phone finally comes of age

Article Abstract:

The success of mobile phone supplier Orange, which has managed to link competitive pricing with clever marketing, has served to move the mobile phone a long way towards being a mass market product. It is still facing competition from Mercury's One-2-One service, but benefits from attractive prices and a rapidly expanding network. Its forthcoming flotation is likely to mark a significant stage in the development of the mobile phone industry in the UK.

'Sons of CEGB' set to dominate power delivery

Article Abstract:

Privatisation of 12 regional electricity supply companies in England and Wales caused prices to increase by an average of 10% in 1991/2 but Offer, the regulatory body, reduced increases to 2% for 1992/3. Nuclear Electric is still government owned. National Power and Powergen are generators selling direct to large consumers. The National Grid Company runs a pooling system for buying and selling power. Contracts protect prices.
