Wirral's swinging voters take the good news to Tony Blair

Article Abstract:

Many people in the Wirral South constituency, where there is to be a by-election on Feb 27, 1996, who have not previously voted for the Labour party are now expressing their intention of doing so. Party leader Tony Blair, who has recently visited the constituency, has stated that the new-style Labour party is popular with many people and that it offers a sensible alternative to Conservative government. He also feels that a protest vote against the Conservative party may be sustained in the forthcoming general election.

Ministers 'contemptuous' of checks on EU

Article Abstract:

Many UK government ministers fail to follow House of Common resolutions which state that they cannot generally agree to European directives or regulations unless a formal government scrutiny procedure has been undertaken. The all-party European Legislation Committee plays a key role in ensuring that European legislation adheres to democratic principles, but it believes that it is often ignored by ministers. This could pose a serious threat to democracy.

There will be no listing to the left on Captain Paddy's ship

Article Abstract:

The UK Liberal Democrats should focus on representing the consumer, rather than producer interest, according to party leader Paddy Ashdown. He believes that the party must take risks, and that it must seek to appeal to new sections of the electorate. He is determined that all policies will be thoroughly reviewed, with nothing being taken for granted. He feels that the Liberal Democrats must be critical, distinctive and quick to act.
