With a roar and a whimper

Article Abstract:

Researchers have been looking at the cheetahs of the Serengeti plains since the 1970s, undertaking the only long-term study of cheetahs in the wild. Aspects of this research have included how cheetah mothers deal with the threat of predators. There was found to be little reaction to recorded hyena calls, indicating that the hyena is not a great threat to cheetah cubs. In contrast, cheetah mothers clearly reacted to recorded lion calls. The strongest reaction was seen in mothers who had reared most cubs.

Iron horses roar on to the Silk Road

Article Abstract:

The new 300-km Mashad-Tedzhen rail link will open up access to central Asia from Iran, Turkey, China and even the UK. Some observers have expressed mixed views about it, as it will give Iran, which is now strongly anti-western, a certain commercial advantage. Iran has been performing well in central Asia and the Caucasus for some time already, and has built on its natural geographical advantages.
