Women killed to save male face

Article Abstract:

Turkish law condones the south-eastern Turkish practice of murdering a woman who has relations with a man outside marriage. Such women are seen as having disgraced their family, and are therefore murdered to restore the family's honour. Under Turkish law, a woman who has relations with a man outside marriage is seen as having provoked her family to murder her, so sentences are short in these cases. In many cases, the murder is carried out by a minor, as minors receive even shorter sentences.
