Working on the bit in the middle
Article Abstract:
Griff Rhys Jones and Mel Smith first appeared on television as a double act in 1983. Their show 'Smith and Jones' is in its eighth series. Although they have done radio commercials, straight drama and directing, they prefer television. They produce the show themselves, independently of the BBC, and rehearse in Acton. The head-to-head is their trade-mark but they are looking for a new system as sketches leave no room for failure. They are developing a theme of people's lives dominated by trivia, finding ways to fill time.

Once, we sought salvation in religion. Now, 10 million prayers are raised for a National Lottery jackpot win - and when that hope is dashed, a man like Tim O'Brien takes his life ... Have we all gone lottery mad?
Article Abstract:
The recent case of Timothy O'Brien, who committed suicide after he discovered that had not won the National Lottery because his tickets had expired, has highlighted concerns about the social impact of lotteries. Opponents believe that lotteries can cause people to act in extreme ways, and that participation can become addictive. A large win can certainly change a person's life, but not necessarily for the better.
