ZIMBABWE: AID WILL BE LINKED TO REFORM
Article Abstract:
A damning official report on the widespread violence at the recent elections in Zimbabwe, has prompted the European Commission to use financial assistance as a leverage to press for democratic reforms within the country. Although EUR 19mn of aid for poverty alleviation will be released, the commission will monitor developments in Harare before issuing a further EUR 2mn for land reform. Observers claims that the ruling Zanu-PF party was responsible for 68% of the 250 incidents reported in Zimbabwe, and therefore future aid will be directly linked to the introduction of human rights reforms.
