Boston's home run

Article Abstract:

Boston's Ted Williams Tunnel has won ASCE's 1996 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award. The tunnel, costing $3.1 billion, is named after the city's most admired baseball player. The construction is the culmination of 20 years of political controversy and four years of construction. The tunnel has the largest circular cofferdam and the deepest interface with an immersed tube tunnel in North America. The tunnel, which is yet to open completely, increases the traffic to Logan Airport and reduces traffic to the other airports by more than half.

Dynamic duo

Article Abstract:

The Fred Hartman Bridge in Baytown-LaPorte, Texas, and Florida's Polk County concentrated phosphate plant sinkhole remediation project have won the 1996 Merit Awards for Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement. The bridge carries eight lanes of traffic, replaces a two-lane tunnel, and has a capacity of 200,000 vehicles a day. The remediation project plugged the erosion cavity of the sinkhole and checked pollution by blocking the hydraulic link between the Florida Aquifer and the gypsum stack.
