Jamestown: a personal reminiscence
Article Abstract:
A group of archeologists investigating the first permanent English colony in colonial America discovers why this 17th-century settlement called Jamestown (Virginia) never quite became a successful, integrated settlement. While the site was one of the most ideal locations for military defense, it was one of the worst areas to inhabit: a low-lying tidewater island on the edge of a marsh. The absence of objects associated with women or children in the colony is one glaring testimony to the miseries the inhabitants of this settlement endured.
