The release of the previously classified Geosat altimetry data is only one of the many ways in which the scientific community benefits from the investments of the US government in Defense Dept. technologies. According to a conservative estimate, the data generated by the $80 million Geosat satellite for a period of one and a half years would have cost scientists $5 billion using conventional surface ship that would have to operate non-stop for a hundred years.
