Computing, NSF to Get Top Billing in 2000 Budget
Article Abstract:
The proposed federal budget for 2000 includes some increases for certain science agencies. Under the budget the National Science Foundation would see it's appropriation grow by 6%, or about 200 million to $3.9 billion. The National Institute of Health would see an increase of 2.2%, or $328 million to $15.6 billion. Other agencies are discussed in light of the proposed budget.

Community Divides Over Push for Bigger Budget
Article Abstract:
A bill proposed by Senators Bill First and Jay Rockefeller would double the budgets of nonbiomedical research agencies from $34 billion in 1998 to $68 billion by 2010, but there is resistance in the scientific community. Many agencies are not even lobbying for the bill, but focusing on other political battles. The biomedical community is ambivalent.

New DOE Research Program To Boost Sagging Industry
Article Abstract:
While the use of nuclear plants in the US has dwindled the Department of Energy has developed a $19 million initiative which created the Nuclear Energy Research Initiative. The goals of the initiative are to develop technologies for cheap and safe reactors for energy, and that will reduce the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
