Japan hopes to cash in on industry-university ties
Article Abstract:
Japan's Ministry of Education, Science, Sports, and Culture is increasing its support of university research. The infusion of money is intended to encourage universities to develop new industries and technologies that can be used to further the country's economic growth.

Universities step up to the challenge
Article Abstract:
Japanese universities have made progress in improving their science facilities and instituting competitive grant programs. The government has a five-year plan for research investment that will double the 1992 level of spending by 2000.
