Buried culvert stands up as short-span bridge

Article Abstract:

Engineers have satisfactorily tested a buried-culvert as a short-span bridge replacement. The tests determined the reaction of the buried culvert to the soil for a span of 36 ft. The bridge, located in Montgomery County, OH, is madeup of seven modular units. Each unit is 36 ft long, 6 ft wide and 9 ft high. The center unit did not collapse when it was tested to a maximum of 200 kips. Culverts are favored as short bridge replacements because they permit road widening and alignment revisions. The concrete is protected from the weather bythe earthfill and a waterproofing membrane.
