Consensus decision

Article Abstract:

There is a lack of unanimity regarding the need of a properly trained, highly skilled manpower and the expenditure incurred on it in the United Kingdom. United Kingdom manufacturing industries depended on a levy/grant and then levy/exemption system managed by the now defunct Engineering Industry Training Board (EITB) from the mid 1960s to the initial phase of 1990s. But the Engineer Training Authority substituted the EITB. It was an employer-dominated standards body without financial power and so the change was as political as practical.

Standard approach

Article Abstract:

Manufacturing companies need to observe a safe and secure working environment for their employees and the companies' component supplies by following a set of health and safety standards. These health and safety standards can be utilized in the formulation of company policies and the adoption of innovative equipment and supplies. Following the standards may prevent downtime and breakdown of machineries which will be beneficial to the manufacturing firms.

Making pay

Article Abstract:

Incomes Data Services conducted a pay level survey of UK's engineering sector. Their remuneration analysis showed that the engineers' income has risen by 3.5% in 1998, which is the highest recorded in the manufacturing industry. This rise in pay level is presumably due to the strength of the pound in the world market and is observed to have effected employers' negotiation for long-term deals, which are usually not below 18 months.
