The Telecommunications Act of 1996, which was legislated to regulate the use of new communication technologies and to promote competition among providers of communication services, is feared to cause more harm than good. Critics say the new bill is a form of censorship that will prevent the success of telecommunications reform.

The advent of highly advanced surveillance and monitoring technologies has raised several critical issues regarding the privacy rights of citizens. Although such systems have proven to be very effective for deterring crime, they can also be used to violate the privacy of individuals.

The European Union's plan to give database creators copyright privileges to the data they have gathered may not be a good idea. Information does not appreciate but provides means for gathering new information. Data can become dated and useless very quickly.
