Depleted fish spawn accord

Article Abstract:

An accord between fishing rivals Canada and the European Union came into effect in January 1996 to control the fast depleting fish stocks of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. The accord has succeeded in stemming the violation of the conservation norms outlined by the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization. The accord puts effective controls on fishing trawlers. Proposals on the equitable sharing of the Greenland halibut quota are being studied. The accord has proved instrumental in the acceptance of the UN Agreement on Straddling and Highly Migratory fish stocks.
